Founded by Joanna, Heartspace started as an art therapy ministry in 2006, to serve the pastoral needs of the community at the Church of St. Mary of the Angels. For nearly 8 years, a spacious studio at the basement of the church was transformed into an ecumenical space, safe and welcoming of anyone who needed a space to find comfort, support and in a shared experience of self-expression through art. In that time, lives were touched, artists were formed and many witnessed how yearly exhibitions made an impact in the hearts of individuals in the community.
This then was the desire that led to the birth of the Angelico Art Awards in 2016.
The Heartspace ministry continues to offer retreats and workshops in collaboration with missions like the Cenacle Sisters.
The Angelico Art Award 2018 invited artists to submit paintings to be considered for the $10,000 (open) and $5,000 (youth) acquisitive awards. The competition invited artists to reflect on the theme, “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Mark 1:3). The Award is organised by Heartspace in support of the Catholic Foundation.
